Storstupet is a deep canyon along Ämån’s course north of Orsa
On a narrow railway bridge, the Inlandsbanan passes over Ämån 34 meters above the water surface. The bridge was built in 1902 by Axel Björkman. There are many nice vantage points where you can look out over the gorge, the fall and the railway bridge.
From the parking lot it is about 50 m down to Storstupet. The area is steep, there are loose rocks and it is far down to the water so be careful when walking here.
The mountain walls of the canyon consist of red sandstone, reddish-brown porphyry and gray-black diabase and shift in different shades.
Directions: Head north from Orsa road 45 about 3 km – take road 296 right towards Skattungbyn-Voxna. In Mässbacken (after about 4 km) turn left at the sign Orsa Tallheds Airport / Storstupet. Follow the road over the airfield, then signs to Storstupet.
